Easy Refried Beans ( Frijoles Refritos)

Refried beans is a dish of cooked and mashed beans and is a traditional staple of Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. Refried beans are incredibly versatile, protein-packed, and nutritious.

Homemade refried beans are the best!! They are delicious as a side dish for so many different meals.

How to Make Cooked Pinto Beans

Start with cooking Pinto Beans:

There are 3 methods I use to cook my beans, Slow-cooker, Stovetop cooking, and Instant Pot

Slow-cooker Method: Clean and rinse pinto beans, add 6 cups of water, and ingredients below*, and cook on high for 4 hours.

Stove CookingRinse your pinto beans and place them in a pot on the stovetop. Cover with water – and bring to a boil. Then turn off the heat and let your beans soak in the hot water for about an hour. Soaking cuts down on the overall cooking time and helps them cook more evenly so they’re tender through and through. It will take about 2 hours to cook.

Instant Pot: Clean and rinse beans, add 6 cups of water, pressure cook on high pressure for 30 minutes for unsoaked beans and allow 15 minutes for natural release.

Whatever method you use choose...  add the following *ingredients to the beans for extra flavor.

  • 1 & 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onions

How to Make Refried Beans

  • Place olive oil in a large skillet or dutch oven on medium heat and saute garlic for 1-2 minutes.
  • Stir pinto beans and 1-2 cups of bean broth into skillet. Add cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, and salt and cook until beans are thoroughly heated for about 5 minutes.
  • Allow the beans to lightly boil while mashing. Add more bean broth as needed to get desired consistency to the beans. Stir occasionally.
  • Save the leftover bean broth and use it to stir into any beans that may be leftover.
